At Land & Sea: An Audiovisual Study of Sussex, 2017.

A collaborative, audiovisual project between myself and sound artist Joe Davin, At Land & Sea is a project broadly surveying the county of Sussex through smartphone photography and field-recordings. Photographs taken in black & white using in-camera filters were made over a period of two years, culminating in a crowdfunded exhibition.

Having begun to explore the smartphone camera as a primary means of creating work, mostly due to lack of access to darkrooms and analogue print-making, At Land and Sea is, on one hand, a exploration in the potential of the smartphone as a legitimate photo making device, and on the other considers sound as a means expand the photographic medium beyond the walls of the gallery.

By using sound composed from field-recordings, personal experience and memory, this exhibition hopes to address both the potential and limitations of photography as an emotive device, and to highlight the communicative power between photography and other media.

The ambient sound piece, composed by Joe Davin, was constructed from field-recordings from the sites depicted photographically, as well as drawing from personal experience and memory.

The first display of this work took place at Nick Ford Photography on Oxford St, Brighton, between the 19th of September and the 7th of October 2018.
